A new base for Fathoms Free

Julian Collison

For the last couple of years, we at Fathoms Free have been storing our pickup truck, boat and box trailer in a small field. It wasn't ideal, the weeds were a constant battle, security wasn't great and access was terrible but it was very cheap and we have always tried to be as economical as possible with out funds.

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our donors over the last 12 months, we are now finally able to move to a more suitable storage location. We now have a yard space in a local storage yard where everything can sit on a well drained hard surface, there are steel gates, CCTV and washdown facilities.

It is a little more expensive than the field but still very reasonable thanks to the keen pricing of Motorworld storage and will enable us to keep our kit in a ready state for response to any reports we receive.

Over the last two days, Jules and Tash have moved the truck, boat and trailer, setup the yard space, sorted through all of the kit and made sure everything is ready to respond.

With no government funding and purely dependent upon donation income, we are extremely grateful to all of our generous donors. If you can spare a few pennies to keep our operation running, please consider using the donation button at the top of this page.

Fathoms Free is a group of volunteer divers who protect marine wildlife and the environment for everyone's benefit by removing ALDFG (abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear) and other marine debris from the coastal waters of Cornwall and Devon.

ALDFG is also known as ghost gear or ghost fishing gear, as it continues to "fish," entangling, trapping, and killing wildlife indiscriminately. These trapped animals will die and act as bait, attracting more wildlife in a vicious cycle of death until the ghost gear is removed from the environment.
