I am a scuba diver, a boat skipper and a marine engineer. Diving changed my life forever, and for the better, and it gave me a window on a world we know little about – you can get better maps of the Moon than charts of most of the world’s seabeds. We are starting to learn how much of an impact our throwaway culture, with its fixation on single-use plastics, is having on the ocean and its life.
Being a Fathoms Free diver is important to me as I can give something back towards the ocean that has been so good to me. We don’t just recover plastic from the ocean – the diving is just one facet of what we do – but we use what we recover to educate people about the dangers we are creating to life, including ourselves.
Plastics are amazing materials, but they do not belong in the ocean and they are only cheap because their true costs do not sit on enough business balance sheets.
